revised business cards

After overwhelming input from email, comments and friends calling for "all plaid", we've updated the back of the business card design to feature nothing but a plaid pattern. David says: "Told you so."

We're still not 100% on the logo/type treatment. We've dropped the circle for now. We're playing with some other type treatments, and will share ideas next week.

Personally, I can't stand brown and orange - but you can see the other schemes from our plaid pattern post. I'm partial to the green, or blue. Or purple! What about purple?

Hey D...linking you guys finally. Sorry for being such a slacker. Linked this blog. But are you keeping Brand Flakes? Which would you rather?

Brand Flakes will continue to be everything it is. ThinkPlaid is a temporary blog - meant only to document our firm's re-branding.

As soon as our firm has finally changed over to Plaid, ThinkPlaid will become our company's website, and BrandFlakes will continue to live as our blog, as it always has been.

Hope you'll be more decisive about your client's branding!

Of course we are. ;)

The most difficult thing in the world is working on your own brand.

More importantly, we're trying to show some of the decisions that DO come into play when working on client brands. Things they wouldn't ordinarily see, behind the scenes.

When it's time to present creative, our clients see beautiful, polished on target work. But well before that presentation day, there are countless creative decisions that take place - that they don't see.

We're sharing that process. Or as much as possible.

We thought it would be cool to share some of these decisions - so when people see our completed identity, readers will understand how the winning designs got to be what they are.

This is a design experiment. We're getting input from anyone willing to share. That includes other designers, branding experts, clients and hobos with an internet connection.

All ideas welcome.

Not 100% on the logotype either.

Two things are hanging me up a bit.

Plaid as a name is already cheeky. And the representative plaid on the back of the card is cheeky.

The typeface is to round, too bouncy... too cheeky, too far?

A (classically based) modern serif could work maybe.

The other is that all caps for a four-letter word that does not begin with F and end with K just does not look right.

It feels like an acronym.

On another note I am not a fan of cryptic titles on cards (yes our company has them). I say either no titles at all or just tell me what you do. I want to know who I am talking to.

My two cents.

Enjoy.

You should bring a sliver of the plaid pattern to either the top or bottom of the info side of the business card.

i must say, while not normally a huge fan of orange or brown, they do look good together in this pattern.

i can almost hear myself saying in my best "client-sensitive" voice: Forget your personal tastes for a moment and honestly ask yourself, "Does this work for what we're trying to accomplish?"

Bone: Right on. Your comment got passed around our office today, and we're all pretty much in agreement.

There's a couple of people here working on new logotypes, and I like where it's going. We'll post new ones soon.

Hal: I laughed hard at your comment. In a good way. I can TOTALLY see myself doing the exact same thing. "You don't want your identity to use the exact same color scheme as everyone else in your industry, right? You want to stand out, and be DIFFERENT, right??"

I like the brown more and more every day.
